One story that resonates deeply with us is about Trent, a young boy with a unique way of connecting with the world.
When Angel was growing up, she met Trent and his family. Trent, the youngest of three sons, was non-verbal and on the autism spectrum. While words weren’t accessible to him, Trent found his own way to communicate — through trains. He used them to express his needs and feelings, placing them in certain spots or presenting specific trains to convey his message. What’s truly inspiring is how Trent didn’t just teach his family to speak his language; he created a bridge to be a part of the conversation.
Stories like Trent’s remind us how important it is to not only listen but to find ways to truly hear others, even when communication may look a little different. It’s also a reminder of the unique challenges faced by individuals with developmental disabilities — and the opportunities we have to support them in leading full, independent lives.
Ohio is home to 265,000 individuals with developmental disabilities, but sadly, it ranks as the fourth worst state for independent living opportunities. A staggering 74% of Ohioans with developmental disabilities rely on family members they live with for care and support. These families work tirelessly to provide what their loved ones need, yet resources often fall short.
That’s why at Way Street Financial, we’re proud to help support organizations like Integrative Community Solutions (ICS). ICS is reshaping the future for individuals with developmental disabilities by creating solutions that empower them to achieve independence and find community. As a member of the ICS board of directors, Angel has seen firsthand the critical work being done to meet the needs of these individuals and their families. She serves alongside our lead accountant, Jeffrey, and together they're committed to bringing about positive change to the community.
